Found Kittens? Here’s What To Do!

Spring and summer are kitten seasons, and sometimes you might stumble upon a litter of tiny kittens in a nest.
Before scooping them up—wait! Mama might still be caring for them. Here’s what to do:

1. DON’T MOVE THEM YET
If the kittens look clean, warm, and quiet—chances are mom is around.
She may be out hunting or hiding nearby. Intervening too early can do more harm than good.

2. WATCH FROM A DISTANCE
Stay back (at least 30 feet) and check every couple of hours for up to 8 hours.
A mother cat will not return if there’s human activity nearby.

3. CHECK FOR SIGNS OF DISTRESS
Are they cold, crying nonstop, covered in fleas, or in danger (e.g., rain, traffic, predators)?
If yes, it’s time to step in.

4. IF MOM RETURNS—LET HER RAISE THEM
Kittens do best with their mother. If she returns, you can provide food and shelter nearby.
Around 5-6 weeks, they can be safely trapped, vetted, and socialized or adopted.

5. IF MOM DOESN’T COME BACK—ACT QUICKLY
Kittens under 8 weeks old need round-the-clock care. Contact a local rescue, shelter, or kitten foster for help. Do not take them to a shelter unless they accept neonates.
